- Study the log first to see if it has any natural weaknesses you can exploit.
- Look also for any obstructions like knots and knarls in the log and avoid them.
- Prepare your working area and keep young children and animals at bay as accidents can easily occur.
- Place the log on your block in a central positon.
- Extend your axe to the log and then take a half step backwards.
- Stand with your legs sufficiently apart to form a firm stance.
- Bend your knees and swing from behind (first ensuring no one is near to your work area).
- Strike the log towards the outside edge, not the centre.
- Make a good swing everytime - a half hearted attempt will not get results.
- If you get too tired then stop and avoid having an accident.
- If the axe sticks in the log use the handle to lever it out.
- If your firewood log falls over on the block do not be tempted to ask someone to hold the log in position for you whilst you strike it.

- Keep your axe sharp at all times
- Work on firm ground
- Keep safety in mind
- Use the right tools for the job
- Work with short lengths of log rounds - around 12 inchs
- Swinging an axe requires space, work in open spaces
- Work with dry firewood logs
- It's easier to work from the outside of the log inwards
- Splitting with a maul makes light work of "difficult" logs

Log Splitting Advice
- If the axe sticks lift the handle, if it's really stuck fast lift the axe and the log and swing again to attempt a deep split. Be careful when attempting this and do not try an over head swing!
- Buy a proper Splitting Axe
- Use a wide, heavy block with a low centre of gravity
- Choose an axe with a long handle - 36 inch handles are ideal
- The bigger the arc of the swing the better the downforce to achieve a good split

- Make firewood small in length rather than longer
- Season logs well before you attempt to split them, a dry log is easier to split
