The rules are quite simple, but your choice and budget determines which will ultimately suit your needs.

General rules of thumb

Rule number 1 - Kiln Dried Logs are better than Fire logs and Heat Logs, Fire Logs and Heat Logs are better than Seasoned Logs and unseasoned logs are cheapest but require seasoning before you burn them.

Rule number 2 - Hardwood logs burn hotter than and longer than softwood logs - softwood is cheaper to buy.

Rule number 3 - If you have an appliance - like a wood burning stove, a multi fuel stove or a boiler always follow the manufacturers instructions and guidance.
