Choosing the Right Log Supplier
Considerations to find the right log supplier for you
There are several considerations which will influence your choice of log supplier:
Here are a few you may wish to consider
- Does the wood supply come from a sustainable source, like FSC certified log suppliers?
- What is the size of the logs being supplied? Are they small and easy to handle or are they too big to fit in a stove for instance?
- From an eco perspective, it is preferable, where possible, to select a local supply source, as this reduces the energy required to transport the fuel to you.
- What type of wood are you actually buying? – hardwood, softwood or a mixture of both? Does the log supplier specify the real wood type?
- Has the wood been seasoned or is it kiln dried? What is the level of dryness of the log or firewood?
- Does the log supplier sell by volume or by weight? They should sell only by volume. It is advisable to buy logs by volume rather than weight as the influence of moisture content is removed.

Try and avoid
The following should be avoided as combustion of these materials can give off unpleasant odours, and can also generate emissions that damage the environment and be harmful to health.
If you are also using an appliance to burn wood it may get damaged by these additional chemical compounds
- Varnished or plastic-coated wood
- Wood treated with wood preservatives
- Unsorted household waste
Quality Assurance
HETAS are developing a wood and biomass fuel quality assurance scheme with the aim of giving customers greater confidence in the fuels being supplied.
This scheme will cover wood logs and also other forms of wood and biomass such as wood pellets, briquettes and wood chips.
